Lindum Group has hosted Year 7, 8 and 9 students from Cleethorpes Academy on its Sea Road construction site in Cleethorpes, where it is building a three-storey seafront building for North East Lincolnshire Council.

The contractor said the visit, for selected students, was designed to show the skills, teamwork and range of jobs needed to deliver a project of this scale, from operating machinery to designing buildings and managing developments.

Hayley Cowell, Social Value Lead at Lindum, led the tour. She said the students were highly engaged and showed genuine curiosity. "They listened attentively, asked insightful questions and actively participated in discussions."

Year 7 student Harry, who hopes to work in construction and drive a digger, said the visit showed him how buildings are made and how to get a job in the sector. "I now know you can even do an apprenticeship when you leave school," he said.

Lindum said Year 8 student Holly had been surprised by how many people were involved in delivering a project such as Sea Road, from early planning to work on site. Cowell said the company hoped to welcome some of the students back in future as the next generation of construction professionals.

North East Lincolnshire Council published its own account of the visit on 21 October, naming Lindum as host.

The project

Lindum is building the new structure on a brownfield site at 2 Sea Road for the council. According to Lindum and the council, it will provide retail or hospitality space, public amenities and a Changing Places facility. Lindum said the first floor will be accessible from Pier Gardens, reinstating a historic link between the gardens and the pier.

The council said on 20 March 2026 that Lincolnshire-based Lindum would construct the building. Lindum said concrete foundations and floor slabs began on Tuesday 4 August, and the council said erection of more than 62 tonnes of structural steel started in the week of 2 October.

The steel is supplied by ArcelorMittal Scunthorpe and installed by Scunthorpe-based North Lincs Structures Ltd, Lindum said. Cllr Oliver Freeston, Leader of the Council, said he was pleased the works had supported steel industry companies at Scunthorpe.

Ed Chambers, Co-chair of Lindum Group Ltd, said 56% of subcontractor spend on the project to date had gone to businesses based within 10 miles of the site.

The funding

The building is one of three Cleethorpes schemes funded by more than £18m awarded to North East Lincolnshire Council from round two of the Levelling Up Fund, according to a GOV.UK case study. The other two are Market Square and Pier Gardens.

The government describes the Sea Road scheme as a new landmark building opposite Cleethorpes pier, intended to extend the town's tourist season.

Lindum

Lindum was founded in 1956 and has offices in Lincoln, Peterborough and York. The company says it has more than 600 employees, over 500 of whom are shareholders, and has been partly employee-owned since 1994. It reported a net profit of £9.93m on sales of £209.3m in 2025, and says it runs apprenticeships and training programmes alongside a social value policy.

What happens next

From 2 November, access to Central Prom will be restricted to Sea Road while drainage from the site is connected to the main sewers, the council said. Its traffic notice of 21 October said the whole project is due to run into mid 2027.
