Staff at Alexander Maltby Limited (AML) have raised £12,261 for Lighthouse Charity by riding the London to Brighton Bike Ride, the construction industry charity announced on 16 October.

AML said it had wanted a challenge that combined fitness and teamwork while raising awareness and funds. According to Lighthouse Charity, the team chose the charity because of what it described as the growing impact of poor mental health on construction workers.

Pinar Willis, Head Buyer at AML, said: "We decided to support Lighthouse Charity because of the great work it does in promoting mental wellbeing within the construction industry."

Willis also said that, over the past decade, the number of workers aged 16 to 34 reporting that their mental health limits the type or amount of work they can do had increased significantly. The release did not give a source for that figure.

The charity said the money would help it continue to provide free and confidential support to people working in construction and their families. It said the ride had also given the team a chance to encourage conversations about the support available to construction workers.

Companies House records list AML's registered office at 109 Saint Johns Hill, London, SW11 1SY, and classify its business as development of building projects.

The charity

Lighthouse Charity says it has provided charitable support to the construction community since 1956. It runs a free, confidential 24/7 helpline, a live web chat service and a text facility.

Its 2024 Impact Report, published in April 2025, said the charity delivered £5,050,902 of charitable support in 2024 and helped 5,695 families, a 29% increase on the previous year. It funded 5,761 counselling sessions and 5,684 family meals over the year.

In 2023 the charity supported 4,435 families, which it said was a 30% increase on 2022, and delivered £3,927,992 of charitable support.

Year Families supported
2023 4,435
2024 5,695

Sarah Bolton, CEO of the Lighthouse Charity, said when the 2024 figures were first released: "The important thing is that people know about us and are reaching out for help."

Rising demand

The charity's current appeal page says it has supported 51% more people this year than in 2025, and that it spent £4.3m on charitable support up to July alone.

To keep supporting construction workers and their families, the charity says it needs to raise a minimum of £200,000 through the appeal.
